Teju Cole: "Camera. The small, dark room: 'camera.' Photography is shadow work, controlled exposure. There is therefore an irony (if not quite a paradox) in showing photographs: extending into the public what is birthed in secret. I think now of the Gospel of Luke: 'Whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed from the rooftops.' Each photo, when seen, when brought out of the small, dark room, is a fulfillment of prophecy."
