July seems to be the month for flowers. Some friends and I went down to Sarasota yesterday to the Ringling Museum and the Ringling roses were in full bloom, as you can see here.

A friend recently asked me just what my religion is. For me that is a difficult question to answer: I've been trying to figure that out myself for several years now. Whatever it is, it's influenced by the gospels (as I understand them) and by Zen. In thinking about his question, it occurred to me that one answer is hinted at in a zen story. The Buddha supposedly was once with his disciples and held up a single flower. Only one disciple responded: with a smile. No words, no dogmas, just a flower. Somewhere in that story is at least a step toward my religion. So here, for all you seekers is another "flower sermon." May you smile . . .
