Japanese aesthetics finds beauty in what it calls wabi-sabi. Wabi has a long list of associations: roughness, poverty, fading or dwindling. Sabi too has many associations: stillness, simplicity, solitude. Together they suggest austerity, arising from or declining back into nothingness, irregularity, unpretentiousness. Perhaps the images give some suggestion of what wabi-sabi means. In any case, not the sort of images most Western people would associate with beauty!
